It’s a summer Saturday and I wiggle in my bed as I hear the morning chit-chat of the birds outside my window. The sun has already risen, which is still incredulous to me, as it isn’t even 5:30am yet.
I am excited. I’m awake, refreshed, and optimistic that I might have an hour to myself before my people’s toes hit the carpet. I smile and channel my inner ninja as I start the coffee and gather the ammo to my Secret Weapon.
I realize this makes me sound like a nut-job. Elated to be awake at 5:30am on a SATURDAY?! Yes, motherhood has done strange and bizarre things to me. But now, it is my Secret Weapon to balance.
I think it’s been established that there is no such thing as a perfectly balanced day, week, month, year, or life. But it can also be acknowledged that when we attempt to include balance in our every day, it helps us pay attention to the important things. Living life ON PURPOSE keeps us focused on the right now, what’s in front of us. It eliminates (or at least reduces) distraction, and there’s no denying the level of peace that comes along for the ride.
I really love days like that. Don’t you?
I’ve come to realize (Albeit slowly, thank GOODNESS you sweet readers GET ME.) that when I begin my mornings in quiet solitude, the rest of my day is significantly better.
The components to my Secret Weapon?
My Bible. My Journal. My coffee. (A titch of sugar. Coconut oil. Heavy cream. Thank you, Jesus.)
Once I have spent some quiet time with my Guidepost, poured my heart on paper, and feel the caffeine running through my veins, then I move on to the icing on my morning cake…
A To-Do list of the day’s priorities. A small task completed for morale purposes (Usually emptying the dishwasher). My gym clothes on and a plan for exercise as soon as possible.
If I am able to do ALL of this before my pack attacks the day, this Mama Bear is centered, peaceful, and downright giddy. (It’s the small things, right?)
The truth is, when I engage my Secret Weapon, I can give my family a better start to their day. They wake to a woman who is calm, alert, and ready to focus on them. I can pack lunches, make a healthy breakfast, and smile while doing it. This sets the tone for our entire day, and inevitably, those are the days I am most present.
Now, we’d be passengers on the crazy train if we thought every single day was like this. In true balance fashion, it just doesn’t happen at every sunrise. Momma sleeps in (because sleeeeep!). Lil’ AC wakes up before the freakin’ birds. SC’s alarm doesn’t go off. Life happens.
It’s not that those are bad days, or even that a balance can’t happen, it just makes it tougher. For me.
What about you? What’s your Secret Weapon?
Are you a night owl? Do you get the most productive when the sun goes down? Does your creativity shine through after everyone else is tucked into their beds?
Perhaps your Secret Weapon isn’t a time of day. Maybe it’s YOUR THING. If you prioritize exercise, is your day bound for success? If you plan out healthy meals, get 8 hours of sleep, or spend time in the Word… Is that the key to your balance? To living a life well-lived?
It’s different for all of us, certainly. But it’s an important question to ask.
What is your Secret Weapon to balance?
If you pinpoint it, strive for it, and enjoy it, well then that’s a life lived ON purpose FOR a purpose!
May we all engage our Secret Weapons… Together.
