Sometimes the biggest revelations come when we are raw, worn out, and have no where else to turn.
I was recently wallowing in that place and surrendered to what I felt God was telling me. With this (perhaps unusual) letter, I found peace and healing.
If you’re battling with stress, big or small, please feel free to read this letter out loud as your own.
And because I believe in the power of spoken word, I also want to encourage you to pray these words beforehand.
Dear Perfect Lord,
I speak these words in the name of Jesus. I call on you for protection against ALL harm and danger, both in this world and the spiritual realm. I ask for an extra measure of your strength and protection over my family, our loved ones, our health, and our finances. I boldly ask that you remove all stress in my life and replace it with the truth of your saving grace. May that truth be bound around my neck to defeat the Enemy always. In Jesus name, Amen.
Much love to you,
You SUCK! You steal joy. You are beyond annoying. And I am not your biggest fan.
I am on a mission to bring you down.
One of the best ways I know to do this is by calling you out on your garbage.
When you do your worst and try your best to eliminate me, it gives me strength to remember these four things…
1) You Have Another Name
You are so ridiculously sneaky. You wear so many different costumes and outfits. You come clothed in To-Do lists and mundane daily obligations. You silently weave your way into my motherhood and duties as a wife. You are relentless when it comes to illness and disease. You take advantage of emotions, guilt, and doubt. You puff up your chest when relationships are strained and finances uncertain. There is no place you won’t slither; and all in the misguided name of Stress.
But I have a secret. I am on to you. You hide behind the name of Stress, but in reality, you are Satan. You are the king of lies and will stop at nothing to destroy me. (John 8:44b “He was a murderer from the beginning, not holding to the truth, for there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks his native language, for he is a liar and the father of lies.”) When Stress comes knocking at my door, I look through the peephole and see you for who you really are: The Enemy.
2) You Are a Choice
You are so smug. You think you have our culture on lock-down. We often glorify our busyness, praising one another for how much we can accomplish in a day, week, or year. We measure our success based on how many healthy meals we prepare, extracurricular activities our child is involved in, or number of times we hit the gym. We think of ourselves as unworthy if we don’t make enough money, fit into a certain size, or dote on our children every second of the day.
But it STOPS HERE.
People everywhere are choosing to step off of the hamster wheel. We are noticing goodness. We are saying NO to unworthiness, and DECLARING that WE ARE ENOUGH. We are embracing our own gifts and admitting that we don’t, and can’t, have it ALL together. We are calling upon our fellow warriors. We are coming along side one another to raise our children, lift one another up, and to live a life of fulfillment and joy. By doing this, we choose Jesus, and the life He intended for us. And you know what? You don’t belong. We are choosing to PASS on what you have to offer.
3.) You are Temporary
When I am under the cloud of desperation, depression, and darkness, Stress can make me think that this is all I will ever know. It keeps me from seeing beyond my circumstances and the bigger, eternal picture. Jesus says in 1 Corinthians 4:17-18 “For our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all. So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen, since what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal.” You make it difficult to hear this, but my Savior is louder. You do not have a permanent residence.
4.) You Have No Power Over Me
Let’s just call a spade a spade. You are The Enemy trying to distract me from the Truth my Savior speaks over me. I am His child. His love for me is so astounding, so lavish, that He constructed a FAIL-PROOF PLAN for me to spend eternity with Him in heaven. BOOM. How do you like them apples?! No matter what you throw my way, or how you disguise yourself, my victory is SECURE. COMPLETE. FINITO, BABY.
So, STRESS, whenever you attack and I’m crying over literal spilled (breast) milk, or battling a serious family crisis, I remember these things. I change my perspective to remember that you are really Satan in disguise. I re-evaluate my choices. I take a deep breath and am reassured that you will not burden me forever. And I declare in the name of Jesus, and by the authority given to me, that you have NO POWER over me. (Luke 10:19 “I have given you authority to trample on snakes and scorpions and to overcome all the power of the enemy; nothing will harm you.”). Not now, and not ever.
A Child of the One True God
